Under the direction of Paul Cienniwa, Newport Baroque presents professional concerts of music of the 17th- and 18th-centuries on period instruments. Founded in 2003, Newport Baroque is well-suited to the 18th-century character of Newport’s historic center, and its concerts reflect the city’s historic preservation initiatives. In this spirit, Newport is linked to the performing arts of the period, and, with Newport Baroque, Newport lives the past through the passion and beauty of historical music.
A federally-recognized 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation, Newport Baroque is involved in community educational outreach through free pre-concert lectures and in-school performances. Since 2005, the orchestra has partnered with higher education, including programming with Providence College, Tufts University, the Yale Association of Rhode Island and the Music Library Association. The 2007-2008 concert season included performances with Grammy Award-winning uilleann piper Jerry O’Sullivan, Vivaldi’s Four Seasons with violinist Robert Mealy, concerts with the Providence Singers and an outreach program with the choirs of Portsmouth High School, sponsored by Target and the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts. The 2008-2009 concert season featured recitals by eminent soloists, Bach cantatas and performances of Henry Purcell’s opera Dido and Aeneas.
